WATER DYNAMICA is a project by Light Up Collective, known for their innovative projection work and as the founders of Uncloud, an interdisciplinary festival in Utrecht. At the heart of the collective is Jaco Schilp, a programmer specializing in Unreal Engine, a widely-used game engine. Collaborating with fluid dynamics scientists Joost Bakker and Monika Moscibrodzka from Radboud University, the team explores the unique properties and behavior of water.
Through their work, they showcase water’s fluid dynamics and its ability to exist in three states—liquid, solid, and gas—while translating these properties into visually stunning projections on surfaces like trees and holographic screens.

Background

This project merges the scientific expertise of Joost Bakker and Monika Moscibrodzka with the creative power of Light Up Collective to reimagine the essence of water through technology. By blending art and science, the project provides a new perspective on water’s unique characteristics, emphasizing its transformation and flow.

// REALISTIC, ARTISTIC REPRESENTATION OF WATER THROUGH PROJECTION

creative process

Using cutting edge lidar scans the team programmed a hyper-realistic representation of water’s fluid dynamics, highlighting its flow properties and transformative states. This digital creation was then brought to life through Light Up’s signature projection style, applied to natural and artificial surfaces like plants and trees

Technology

The project utilized Unreal Engine, advanced programming techniques, and projection mapping to visually represent water’s physical properties. By collaborating with scientists, the collective bridged the gap between art and science, creating a unique experience that deepens our understanding of water in a visually compelling way.
